The nbn™ is Australia's national broadband network — the wholesale infrastructure that carries internet and phone services to homes and businesses across the country. mphone delivers your service over it. Here's what's useful to know.
The nbn™ network is Australia's high-speed internet network, built and operated by NBN Co and used by providers like mphone to deliver data and phone services wherever you live. Rather than dealing with NBN Co directly, you choose a provider — we handle the connection, the plan and the support.
mphone can connect you at any nbn™-serviced address, organise technician visits and equipment where needed, and get your phone number working over the new network.
NBN Co uses different technologies in different areas. Your connection type is set by the network at your address — and it affects the maximum speeds available to you.
Fibre runs all the way into your home or office. Supports the full range of speed tiers.
Fibre runs to a street cabinet, with the existing copper line covering the last stretch. Your distance from the node and the condition of that copper affect your achievable speed.
Common in apartments: fibre reaches the building's communications room, then the internal wiring carries it to your unit.
Fibre runs to a small pit outside your premises, with copper only for the final few metres.
Uses the cable network originally built for pay TV, connected through an NBN Co connection box.
For regional areas: an antenna on your roof receives the signal from a local nbn™ tower.
Not sure which one you have? Send us your address and we'll tell you, along with the speeds available.
The speed you achieve is influenced by several factors: your connection type, how close your premises is to the node on your street, the quality and age of the copper running from the node to your premises, your modem and Wi-Fi setup, and how busy the network is during peak evening hours.
For FTTN and FTTB connections, we can't confirm your maximum line speed until your service is installed and activated — if your line can't properly benefit from the tier you chose, we'll work with you on alternatives.
Understanding nbn™ speedsSend us your address and we'll confirm availability, connection type and the right plan — usually the same day.
